Migrating to Windows 7 is something many companies will face the next couple of years. Using desktop virtualization or VDI in the process is something a lot of those companies consider (read Ruben Spruijt’s article about the different types of dekstop virtualization and the role of Windows 7). In this article I would like to point out a couple of challenges a company might face when migrating from XP to Windows 7 using VDI. Don’t expect to learn about the advantages of VDI or about best practices for migrating to Windows 7 in general.

At VMworld 2009 in San Francisco I visited the InstallFree booth. And while I was there, the guys from InstallFree showed me this concept of the universal client, where you package/virtualize your applications once and run those applications on XP, Vista, Windows 2008 and Windows 7. “Is this so special?” I thought to myself. Well, actually it is. Where some of the vendors will make it sound very easy to migrate to a new OS when using their application virtualization solution, in fact it isn’t. Microsoft App-V 4.6 Beta Available : now package 64-bit apps !
Microsoft announced the immediate availability of the App-V 4.6 beta from Microsoft Connect.
One of the major improvements is that the sequencer now packages native 64-bit applications, and with this they seem to be the first in the market ! Off course this is a beta and the question is whether Microsoft will really be the first to release an RTM product that packages 64-bit apps.
