What is the impact of Application Virtualization on VDI?

Virtual Reality Check

It is currently almost impossible to conceive a VDI deployment without Application Virtualization. The management benefits of Application Virtualization are real and proven, especially within centrally hosted virtualized desktops. By isolating/virtualizing applications and streaming these on demand, a much more dynamic and flexible delivery of applications is possible in comparison to classic MSI installations. Typically, when a VDI deployment needs to support many applications, Application Virtualization becomes a key component to its long term success.
Besides of all the Application Virtualization benefits there are some down-sides as well. Some of these are: not all applications can be virtualized, interaction between applications can be a challenge and there is an overhead on the system resources such as CPU, Memory and storage.
The primary goal of Project Virtual Reality Check phase IV is to investigate the overall scalability impact of using Application Virtualization solutions within VDI.  The three biggest and most commonly used vendors in the VDI market space are investigated: Citrix Application Streaming, Microsoft App-V and VMware ThinApp. These three solutions were compared in different streaming configurations, and Office 2007 was virtualized together with other applications.”

This is the introduction of the new whitepaper Project Virtual Reality Check just released. … Continue Reading

Disappearing Virtual NIC & VMX has left the building

Elvis has left the building

I know I’m not the first who noticed it, since this message is to be found in log files for years with ESX, but I still wanted to share this one:

Especially when you’re seriously troubleshooting an issue and this message appears, it’s a good laugh. Kudos to the VMware programmer with humour :) .

vSphere client for iPad now available, and it’s free!

vSphere Client for iPad

After the release of the VMware View client for iPad last week, there is now a new VMware application for the iPad: the vSphere client! This client is now available for download at the iTunes Appstore and it’s free of charge!

The only thing you need to have installed is a virtual appliance from VMware:  The vCMA.

Steps to take:

  • download the OVF, import it in VMware vCenter and modify the ip-settings so it has a fixed ip address. An optional step is to create a DNS-record for this appliance. Now that you’ve installed the vCMA, configure your VMware vSphere client for iPad.
  • Once the vCMA virtual appliance powers on, on the home screen of the iPad go to “Settings”, scroll down and tap on “vSphere Client”. Now enter the IP Address of the vCMA virtual appliance in the “Web Server” field. … Continue Reading

ThinApp deployment methods whitepaper

I’ve created a whitepaper that describes different kind of methods to deploy ThinApp applications. ThinApp is often compared to other application virtualization solutions that have a deployment mechanism build-in, like Microsoft App-V or Citrix XenApp streaming. ThinApp doesn’t have a build-in deployment mechanism, but there are a lot of options to deploy ThinApp applications. This whitepaper will describe several methods to deploy ThinApp applications.

My plan is to include RES Workspace manager, Appsense, LiquidwareLabs Profile Unity and other methods to the whitepaper in the next couple of months. If you have any comment or suggestions, mail me or leave a comment.
