The long awaited update (3.1) for VMware View is finally released. The most important thing in my eyes are the so called Performance Improvements. According to the release notes the login times are significantly improved and server utilization is reduced. I’ve seen View implementations with 3.0 which had serious problems at logon time so I hope that this solves the issue.

Besides that View Manager 3.1 includes the following enhancements:

I wanted to test the VMware View Offline desktop. I know it has some limitations at the moment and that it is still an experimental feature. But still, I wanted to be able to show a customer the capabilities that VMware View already has in the current release, whether it is an experimental feature or not. I managed to work around some of the limitations and in this post, I explain how. Read the rest of this entry »

I still need to sort all this information out to write one big or maybe a couple of smaller articles concerning design considerations, VDI server sizing, security impact, remote display protocol, performance requirements and future promises. VMworld Europe 2009: Client Virtualization Platform (CVP)

February 24, 2009

Today VMware announced new collaboration with Intel Corporation to deliver the VMware Client Virtualization Platform (CVP) as a new product that will be part of the VMware View suite of desktop virtualization products. According to the press-release, the upcoming Client Hypervisor requires Intel vPro:

VMware CVP is a bare-metal client hypervisor optimized to run on desktop and notebook client PCs utilizing Intel® Core®2 and Centrino® 2 processors with Intel® vPro™ technology. CVP will extend the centralized management capabilities of VMware View by enabling end users to run their virtualized desktop environments on desktop or notebook PCs and work online or offline while IT administrators manage these environments securely from a central location. This helps customers further reduce the operating costs of PC management while boosting business flexibility and end user productivity.

This is already a little more information than we got during the keynote speech. I think Stephen Herrod will dive a little deeper tomorrow during his keynote session. I will keep you posted!
