According to Thomas Koetzing XenApp 5.0 will be released the 10th of September (and my hunch is that the software will be available even earlier!) and will also be available for Windows Server 2003! Citrix always claimed that XenApp 5.0 would only be available on Windows Server 2008 and XenApp 4.5 would stay under development for Windows Server 2003. But Citrix came to their senses and realized that forcing their customers to move to W2K8 was not the way.
So now the question is which OS are you going to choose? That’s something you can only decide when you know what’s new and which features will or will not work on a certain OS.
Some new features (compared to CPS4.5) that are available both on W2K8 and W2K3: Read the rest of this entry »

Sure, you’ve read about the Update 2 troubles. VMWare made a huge mistake by releasing something with trial-code in it, and the impact can be huge when put into production but there’s what’s bugging me : the whole world is acting like the impact it has is catastrophic.
Virtualization.info started with the topic title ”VMWare mistake shuts down thousands of Virtual Infrastructures”, later on nuanced by “may shut down”. They also state that 95% of the Fortune 500 customers use VMWare and over 50% uses VMotion. Yeah, sure they do, but do you really think that administrators working at a Fortune 500 company think : “hey wow a new patch; it’s from VMWare so it’ll be good; let’s put it into production right now!” ?
Really, lots of people are acting like there are hundreds of thousands of virtual servers around the world that have been down and we should all stop using VMWare and switch to the “beautiful” Hyper-V or XenServer solution but: Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday and today my colleague Rob Mokkink and I were getting very negative feelings towards the VizionCore vRanger Pro and Veeam Backup products, but like often, the problem existed behind the keyboard. But we prefer to call it an “undescribed feature” of these products.
We downloaded the latest versions of both products to see which product would fit best in our current environment and connecting to the Virtual Center servers went flawless but with neither of the 2 products we could connect to our ESX hosts. Errors that occured were errors that nobody experienced before, according to the product support forums. Read the rest of this entry »

After VMWare’s announcements about them raising the prices Citrix was to be expected to do the same.
Today I got an e-mail from our Citrix distributor CDG that pricing of the entire Citrix portfolio will go up with 10% starting the 1st of September 2008. This only counts for Read the rest of this entry »

One of the things you have to be carefull within a Virtual Infrastructure environment, just as in every other environment by the way, is how your LUNs are balanced over the HBA’s. Especially when you have a pretty dynamic infrastructure you might not always pay attention to this.
My colleague Rob Mokkink has made a pretty nice powershell script that balances LUN’s on the different HBA’s.
What it does :

Last week VMWare released the long expected Update 2 for the VMWare 3 Infrastructure products. Besides cool new features like Hot-cloning VM’s, W2K8 Guest support, Storage VMotion and VSS quiescing support, one of the new features is the so called EVC.
This is introduced as just another feature in the VMWare Infrastructure product line but this should not be taken lightly. EVC stands for Enhanced VMotion Capability and it is a technology which Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday VMWare announched that founder and CEO of VMWare Diane Greene is replaced immediately by ex-Microsoft executive Paul Maritz. It needs to be said that Paul Maritz, wasn’t working at Microsoft for over 8 years, but nevertheless it’s an interesting move.
For those who keep close track on VMWare’s public activities and announcements it’s known that the CEO of EMC and the CEO of VMWare had some differences in opinion [understatement].
The direct effect at this point is Read the rest of this entry »
