Yesterday I had a presentation (not under NDA) from VMware about the improvements and features that we can expect with View 4.5 (no guarantees) and I was impressed as well as disappointed. Impressed by the small additions/improvements that together create a more mature and complete Desktop Virtualization solution. Disappointed about the fact that the feature that really drew my attention : Virtual Profiles (the RTOSoft acquisition) has some big disadvantages which gives me the feeling I still need a “real” Profile Virtualization solution.
It’s my personal guess, not mentioned by VMware, that View 4.5 will be released at VMworld 2010 San Fransisco in August 2010.

Today Scense version 6 is released. For those who don’t know Scense yet : it acts in the same area as RES PowerFuse: it makes application delivery and desktop management a whole lot easier.
The power of Scense is that they’re making every process as simple as possible. Scense is already well-known by their Full Session Control. This means that Scense has defined 9 moments where you can control your users session, where in a traditional environment you only have 2 : @logon and @logoff.
One of the cool new features is Scense Easy Delivery. Distributing an MSI to a usergroup for example is done as easy as “Select package”, “Select usergroup”, “click OK”. See for yourself here : http://www.scense.nl/Products/Movies.aspx (first movie).
yesterday I’ve installed the new release RES Wisdom 2009 on my test environment. As you can see in an earlier post my expections of the new release were very high! First thing that impressed me was even though it was a huge update (a lot of new features were added) the installation process was still as easy as when adding a patch. This how it should be with every type of software but my expeience is that most of the times when you want to upgrade to a new version it takes a whole lot more than adding an update package!
What I am most greatful about… The interface didn’t change a lot. This way I can still easily navigate through the console.
Cool Stuff summary:
- Create Run Books (combine projects and modules and schedule them)
- Create\Delete\Snapshot ESX Virtual Machines
- Powershell tasks (really cool when you know how to use it
)
- Exchange tasks (create mailbox, and sent -mail)
- Added several (missing) conditions
As a summary I would like to add “It’s getting more mature”
In the rest of this post you’ll find my experience with the new features…
User settings and profiles always make the design of a new Architecture with virtualisation products (are there still any others?) a lot more difficult. Users want to be able to save application preferences, favorites etc etc. and administrators want a good managed performance (network and servers). Due to the different ways to provide a workspace to users (SBC, VDI, Old fahioned deployment etc.), the way of moving user preferences with the users becomes more and more of an issue. Because profiles are becoming bigger and bigger, a roaming profile isn’t much of a solution anymore. So a new way of user profiling is needed, I’ve found three solid options.
