My colleague and I are getting ready for VMworld and as you know we will be blogging at this event. To promote our blog, we will be wearing unique VirtualFuture.info polo-shirts. On the back of the shirts, we want to put a funny slogan and maybe you can help us out. Think of a funny slogan that has to do with virtualization and win a VirtualFuture.info polo-shirt! The best 3 slogans will win a shirt and the competition ends August 31 2008 at midnight (CET).
Here are some examples:
“I blog on virtualfuture.info and all I got was this lousy shirt”
“I got this Hypervishirt from VirtualFuture.info”
“High Available shirt”

According to Thomas Koetzing XenApp 5.0 will be released the 10th of September (and my hunch is that the software will be available even earlier!) and will also be available for Windows Server 2003! Citrix always claimed that XenApp 5.0 would only be available on Windows Server 2008 and XenApp 4.5 would stay under development for Windows Server 2003. But Citrix came to their senses and realized that forcing their customers to move to W2K8 was not the way.
So now the question is which OS are you going to choose? That’s something you can only decide when you know what’s new and which features will or will not work on a certain OS.
Some new features (compared to CPS4.5) that are available both on W2K8 and W2K3: Read the rest of this entry »

That Virtualization is going strong and still growing more and more mature are showing VMware and Microsoft. So during the past few days major changes happened on the licensing front:
VMWare joined Microsoft in their Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program Program (SVVP), this is great news because it makes virtualization even more attractive
and
Microsoft changed their License agreements for running their software in a virtualized environment and most surprisingly not only their own platform (Hyper-V) but others as well. Read all about the changes here.

The rumor is spreading that ESX 4.0 will be announced at VMWorld 2008 in Las Vegas. In the VMworld forum someone noticed that Lab A (Datacenter Tech Preview) is not available on Monday but starts right after the General session on Tuesday. You might conclude that ESX 4.0 will be announced during the general session on Tuesday. If you read the description of Lab A you can pretty much guess that this is about ESX 4.0:
LAB A description:
The next generation virtual datacenter from VMware will encompass exciting new technologies that further extend the flexibility, efficiency and dynamism of IT environments. A preview of these new server, networking and storage related technologies, how they work and how they can be configured to deliver higher levels of availability, resource efficiency and simplified management in IT environments will be provided.
It is pretty cool that we can get hands-on experience with the latest beta-product. Maybe we all get a USB-key with ESXi 4.0 beta?
There are also some other session that gives away that ESX 4.0 will be announced.

VMWorld is getting in everybodies blood, everybody is getting nervous. In this case it is Vizioncore with the announcement which products will be demoed at VMWorld in Las Vegas. Here’s the mail I received from these guys:
Vizioncore will be demonstrating a number of new and updated products at VMworld next month, and also offering ‘sneak previews’ of a couple of near term products. Read the rest of this entry »

VMWare has released a new build of their flagship products ESX3.5Update2 (build #110268) and ESX3i 3.5Update2 (build #110271), due to the problems mentioned earlier on this blog. VMWare kept their promise to fix the problems with the expiration bug very quick. The updated binaries can be downloaded here.

Sure, you’ve read about the Update 2 troubles. VMWare made a huge mistake by releasing something with trial-code in it, and the impact can be huge when put into production but there’s what’s bugging me : the whole world is acting like the impact it has is catastrophic.
Virtualization.info started with the topic title ”VMWare mistake shuts down thousands of Virtual Infrastructures”, later on nuanced by “may shut down”. They also state that 95% of the Fortune 500 customers use VMWare and over 50% uses VMotion. Yeah, sure they do, but do you really think that administrators working at a Fortune 500 company think : “hey wow a new patch; it’s from VMWare so it’ll be good; let’s put it into production right now!” ?
Really, lots of people are acting like there are hundreds of thousands of virtual servers around the world that have been down and we should all stop using VMWare and switch to the “beautiful” Hyper-V or XenServer solution but: Read the rest of this entry »

Very important to all the customers who installed ESX(i) 3.5 update 2. I just received this e-mail:
Dear VMware Customers,
We have released the express patches for the product expiration issue. Please go to http://www.vmware.com/go/esxexpresspatches for more information.
Problem:
An issue has been discovered by many VMware customers and partners with ESX/ESXi 3.5 Update 2 where Virtual Machines fail to power on or VMotion successfully. This problem began to occur on August 12, 2008 for customers that had upgraded to ESX 3.5 Update 2. Read the rest of this entry »
