When I would build Microsoft images or templates, within the guest OS, I would just make sure to install both SCSI drivers. That way, no matter which SCSI disk type someone used, they would get a working, bootable virtual machine rather than a rebooting blue screen of death. Very strange stuff that you uncovered there.
